Integrative Medicine

Medical care is not one-size-fits-all.
Every animal is different and deserves individualized care.

Now, in addition to the full range of conventional veterinary medicine, RAPS Animal Hospital is proud to offer on-site integrative therapy options for animal care, from Physiotherapy to Acupuncture.

This furthers RAPS Animal Hospital's commitment to give pet guardians convenient access to the care and therapies that work best to ensure pets live their most comfortable and full lives.

Many of these therapies have solid scientific data supporting their efficacy, and are well known as they are frequently used in human medicine.  At RAPS Animal Hospital, your pets can now benefit from these therapies as well.

These kinds of therapies can be helpful by themselves or in addition to complement existing approaches for treating or managing a range of conditions.

There are many situations where conventional surgery or pharmaceutical medications are not an option, are not tolerated, or are no longer as effective as they were in treating a condition.

Some common conditions that are regularly treated with integrative therapies include:
  • Pain management (including osteoarthritis; cancer; musculoskeletal injury, including intervertebral disc disease; post-surgical care)
  • Kidney disease
  • Chronic allergies
  • Chronic gastrointestinal issues
  • Chronic skin issues
  • Seizures disorders
  • Behavioural disorders
  • Sporting or active animal care and preventative maintenance
  • And more

Therapy and modalities used in physiotherapy and/or integrative therapy at RAPS include:

Laser therapy (photobiomodulation)
Laser therapy uses focused light energy to promote healing in tissues by stimulating the cell mitochondria, which boosts energy production and directs cell function. This process increases blood flow, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the area, while reducing inflammation and pain. As a result, laser therapy accelerates tissue repair; making it effective for treating any tissue that has pain, inflammation or is in the process of repair. Some examples include injuries, arthritis, bladder infection, surgical sites, wounds and more.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment, which allows more oxygen to dissolve in the blood and reach tissues throughout the body. This increased oxygen supply helps enhance the healing process by promoting stem cells/cell regeneration, the growth of new blood vessels, reducing inflammation, and fighting infections. The high pressure also allows oxygen to penetrate areas where circulation may be poor, such as wounds or other traumatized tissues. HBOT is an incredible tool to help conditions including:  post-op recovery; aiding in the tissue and wound recovery; healing Intervertebral Disc Disease to wounds; and more.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) uses low-frequency electromagnetic field to stimulate and enhance cellular function; in particular to address the body's primary inflammatory pathways responding to injury. PEMF therapy uses the body's natural cell pathways that address pain, inflammation, or healing tissue (such as a sprained ankle, hot spot, or wound). PEMF stimulates the body to use these pathways more often than it normally would, speeding up tissue repair and reducing recovery time.

PEMF increases dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain and so can be helpful managing stress and anxiety as well.

RAPS Animal Hospital is proud to offer Integrative Medicine to deliver the widest range of opportunities for your pets’ health and well-being.
